FAQs

Why 54 miles?

54 Miles is the distance from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In 1965, civil rights leaders organized a set of marches focused on the Voting Rights Act that culminated on the famous March 23-28 5-day march along US Route 80 (“The Jefferson Davis Highway”) from Selma to Montgomery.

How do I participate?

Individually, or with small groups, you commit to walking, running, biking, or otherwise moving 54 miles in total from August 28th (the March on Washington) through September 26th. Sign up on our page to track your miles and let us know you’re participating!

Our goal is for this to be socially virtual and physically individual.

How can I publicly share my commitment?

Here are just some ideas. Remember to always use the #My54 hashtag!

  • Post a picture (the sweatier the better) of you or your team after part of the walk/run/bike

  • Sign up as a coalition partner and share My54 with your community

  • If you exercise outside, share your exercise map from a fitness app like MapMyRun, Strava, RunKeeper, or Nike Run Club

  • Share our #My54 social square to your Instagram account

  • Add the #My54 hashtag to your Peloton username

How can I learn more about the Civil Rights Movement?

Please feel free to review our resources section, which provides (very basic) information and links to (much better) coalition organizations, museums, and programs on John Lewis, C.T. Vivian, the Civil Rights movement, and the Selma march.

Are you raising money?

No. This is not a fundraising venture, but a personal movement. If you would like to donate time, talent, or treasure to any of our coalition partners, please contact them directly.
